About

Robert Charlton rowing towards Lakefield. Circa 1938.

Lakefield is a unique waterfront property built in 1931 by 80-year-old eccentric Tyneside industrialist Robert Charlton, who lived to enjoy his century. We hope that you will share with us its special enchantment.

From the 32 ft long boathouse room with its full width 7 ft high windows, you will delight at the uninterrupted east and south-facing views over the lake to Hallin Fell and Sandwick Bay, with Place Fell in the middle distance and the Helvellyn range beyond. The converted boathouse room features the original lakeland stone wall and incorporates the kitchen and dining areas. Glazed doors to the front and side respectively open out to an elevated lawn and sun deck. A wood-burning stove provides supplementary heating.

Delightful views can also be enjoyed from the 345 sq ft oak-panelled lounge with its 24 ft-long panoramic window. Sunsets can be an unforgettable experience. A wood burning stove is set in the original fireplace.

With almost half a mile of private water frontage, guests are invited to bring their canoes, windsurfers and small dinghies without charge. Owners of large motorboat and sailing boats (up to 23 feet) may be accommodated at a modest charge. Launching and recovery is easy from the hard slipway. Boats can be moored to the jetty, or at a buoy by arrangement. Guests have free use of our small rowing boat, subject to availability, but at own risk.

As Riparian Owners we extend permission for our guests to fish from Lakefield. Please note that anglers over 12-years-old are required to hold an Evironment Agency rod licence which may be obtained from Post Offices.

In the warmer months a wide round table with with garden chairs are placed on the south-facing sun deck. A large sun umbrella is provided. The lower patio area has reclining loungers and is ideal for water-front barbecues.
